Bin collection update

Friday 10 June update from South Cambs DC on Green bins

Please note that our green bin crews are still aiming to catch up from the areas not serviced between Saturday 4 and Tuesday 7 June. Please allow up to nine days after the original collection day for your bin to be emptied. Leave your bin out during this time and we will attempt to return to empty it. However, if your green bin(s) are / is not emptied within this time frame, then we apologise but will not be able to return until your next scheduled green bin collection. If this is the case then these areas will be prioritised if there are any future disruptions. Please check the list below to see the areas affected.

The reason for this disruption is that the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service is facing some short-notice staffing issues. Crews continue to do their very best every day to empty as many bins as possible. They also face the challenge of increased recycling loads following local Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the associated increase in packaging for recycling.

There are two primary reasons for these staff shortages, which are also being reported by other local Councils. Despite our sustained and long-term recruitment campaign, we still have vacancies for eight drivers and 14 loaders. Usually, these vacancies would be covered by agency staff. However, there is clearly a shortage of agency staff in our area which means there are fewer relief staff able to support us. Our annual leave levels remain within their usual parameters and sickness-related leave is within expected levels too.
